When I was a little kid and an adult told me a good story, I would say “again” when it was through. Here is my again of the Superman story. We have been to this movie before. With Krypton about to be destroyed, a baby is sent to earth in a capsule. That baby is adopted and becomes Clark Kent. We see Clark discover his powers, then struggle with them and the responsibilities they bring. When a threat to all of Earth comes calling, it is Clark Kent who must defend us all as The Man of Steel.

In the end, the earth is destroyed. Just kidding! I wanted to see if you were paying attention. I won’t tell you what happens, but come on!

The comic books were such a part of my childhood that I was Superman for Halloween for 8 years in a row. Star Wars was the only entity powerful enough to change my costume choice and even that was a struggle, but after all those years the costume was becoming pretty ratty (and a little smelly too). Boy was my mom happy!

Kernel - Thank you much for understanding and appreciating my passion. It can be easily misconstrude as overbearing opinions lol. But ever since i was a kid and fell in love with cinema I've always watched every film from a subjective pov. Never objectively. I always look for insights and antecdotes from the filmmakers and actors about the making of the film to better understand it, because i do see film as an art form as well as a form of entertainment. Not just solely as entertainment. As much as i wish everyone loved every film that i love i know that wont happen because i know everyone has different tastes in movies. And i try to bear that in mind always. So at the end of the day i always respect everyones opinion, and value them. This site is a blessing!

Thanks Phillip. I appreciate your passion and enjoy the perspective that you bring to a film. You watch a movie as much your heart as with your eyes. Your internal dialogue during a film would be fascinating to listen to :) I started this project to allow people the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about movies and to selfishly gain knowledge from their input. I have my own views but purposely make those a very low priority in order to let the board be the place for the users to contribute. On this particular movie, I think that we agree and disagree. The story and the struggles of the main character are beautiful but the delivery and pace of the film did not appeal to me. My point on the majority opinion of the board still stands. Other sites and the weekend box office show that the movie is a clear winner but this little site offered a variety of opinions with a different slant and that is why I love it soooooo much :)

So when I become especially passionate about a film; when I feel the internal need to stand up for that film and defend it, it is impossible to say very little. Asking me to write one small paragraph about film, especially a film that I've seen and love is an exercise in futility.

I feel it's a fantastic combination to have epic visuals with completely grounded locations and characters! This film is the way the character of Kal-El/Clarke Kent/Superman SHOULD have been presented all along in movies - complex, conflicted, real and yet possesses pure morals that can be shaken but never broken. Someone that children and adults from all walks of life can look up to! And this picture has all of that going for it!

And regular movie goers have a tenancy to DEPEND and RELY on those "critics" to tell them the "truth" so they can make a decision on whether to see a film or not. I believe that is a HUGE mistake because my philosophy is and always has been that Ridiculously High Expectations Often Let People Down. I challenge movie lovers and movie goers to think for themselves and not necessarily make a decision whether or not to see a film based on the word of another. I say see movies because you want to, see it because you believe it will turn out to be a movie worth seeing! I feel Man Of Steel is an excellent picture!! David S. Goyer, Zack Snyder & Christopher Nolan have created completely believable, relatable and grounded characters and placed them in a "Smallville" and "Metropolis" that is like an "every place", which makes it more believable that something like that could happen! I feel this movie is amazing!...

...that are inherently all different but all strive towards one goal, yes even Lois Lane who I have heard from plenty of people as not being complete or fleshed out. And to that I say "NAY! You are wrong." She serves a greater purpose, greater than people give her credit for! And you see that in the story as it unfolds! But I believe Man Of Steel 2 will in fact begin to show people a greater piece of a very big story. Numbers are numbers, they reflect nothing. In fact this whole thing about people worrying it will not do well in its opening weekend, audiences being disappointed in it, etc. I feel it has A LOT to do with people telling others its not good so audiences are afraid to see it because they feel they may be disappointed. I feel like early reviews came from people who were willing to cut down the picture and write their "review" as something that is the "end all, be all" ultimate truth when they really have NO RIGHT to speak for everyone else. Every and any human being on this earth struggles through out their lives to discover their own identity, who they are, what they're capable of, and have yet to discover they are capable of extraordinary things. Some even struggle to find out where they come from and who their real parents are. You cannot get more of a human story than that, sir! I believe there is a fantastic film here with a well written story of hope. When you get to the meat of this story, when you pull back and see the picture from a wider range you get to see that every single character is struggling to do what is right, what they think is right and for the right reasons. I would listing those examples off but I don't want to ruin the film for those who haven't seen it yet. The fact of the matter is I feel the spectacle, the visuals are the icing on the cake but are presented on such a grand epic scale that it has managed to blind many people from seeing a well written story with well rounded characters....

Kernel, before you go accepting this so called "general consensus" I would recommend you see the film for yourself and make up your own mind about this film. This isn't about spending money on a possible "bad movie", this is about forming your own opinion. And as a movie lover and a person who runs a movie website, if you haven't done so yet you owe it to yourself to see the film for yourself. I resent all of these comments about a lack of character and humanity within the story. Maybe its just me who is seeing what others are not. We're talking about a man who grows up knowing he is different but not knowing why or from where he comes from, who his parents are, why he is the way he is; and yet he has it within himself to do what is right and grows up being taught by a father figure on how to be a man and know when and what to do what is right, he finds out he is able to do the extraordinary - And really how can you possibly get anymore human than that??....

Two words come to mind about this movie - wretched excess! C'mon where was the human story in this movie. It's all action with very little dialogue and all of it without the slightest bit of humor. I admit I was hesitant to go to this film since I'd seen the original movie so I checked some reviews. They were mixed with varying reasons why it wasn't top flight. Once again - just because you can do it with CGI you don't have to do it. One more thing - one of the images of a building collapsing was reminiscent of 9/11 and I think movie makers need to consider these isssues when editing.

This is not a bad movie. It’s just not the great movie I was hoping for. Michael Shannon was good as the villain. Russell Crowe was good as Jor-el. If you like action sequences this movie is chock full. Finally, Henry Cavill had the Superman look down pat. I had 3 problems with the movie. The first is the movie appears to be almost devoid of humor. When I compare this with Ironman the funny interactions between Stark and the other characters makes him more human and likeable. Superman is a much harder character to do because he is such a goody two-shoes without any major character flaws, so some comedy relief would have helped. The second problem was that because he was continuing to go from disaster to disaster, we never feel like we know who he is beyond the strong man with a big smile. Finally, the 3D was totally wasted in this movie. For most if the movie I was wondering if my glasses were working or not because the movie still looked 2D.

With a strong opening on the planet Krypton, "Man of Steel" looked as though no granules of Kryptonite would be found anywhere, but once the superhero landed on Earth, the film became top heavy with action and special effects and scant on plot. Michael Shannon commanded the screen as General Zod while Russell Crowe brought strength and sensitivity to Jor-El. Even Amy Adams, with her more intelligent take on Lois Lane, worked. What did not work, however, was Henry Cavill as Superman. Told in a non-linear fashion, the darker, more introspective Superman did not translate well to the big screen in anything other than a knitted brow. Even though this Superman was physically "Super Hot", he lacked virility and just could not credibly muscle the awesome talent of the cast.

I know Superman is so iconic, I am a huge huge fan of The Man Of Steel so i am very protective of wanting people to maintain his integrity. This is a Superman, that for once, am proud to see in a movie. Not that I never loved all of the other renditions of this character. But it seems like all of those other renditions have only been stepping stones that lead to this point. There has always been a sort of light and campy and made for tv feel to this character. But i could tell right away with this one that they are presenting this story and character in a very grounded way. The presentation and dialogue is moving and beautiful and uplifting, and like i said empowering. And to be honest this trailer is one of the best I've seen. I absolutely love the idea that the S isnt an S on Krypton and that it is a symbol for Hope. I have a feeling that, finally there will be a Kal-El/Clark Kent/Super Man that adults and children especially will be able to truly look up to. The scope has been and always will be massive because it is Super Man we're talking about. So that doesn't bother me, in fact i love how massive the scope is in this film!

I cannot express enough how much of an anticipation I have for this film!! As much as there are a lot of movies coming out that I wanna see, this one that I want to see more!! There is such a breathtaking, grounded, empowering, beautiful and uplifting quality that is in the story, in the dialogue. Something that was never introduced into any past Superman cartoons, TV show or film that ever came out film!! I've been getting to hear pieces and even full tracks to the score to this film before its release and I gotta say it's made me well up! Not to mention I've seen some featurette segments about the movie and I feel I will be truly "Wowed" by this picture!! Cannot wait to see it!!

Dan, excellent post and loaded with great insight! I agree that this rendition may have internal conflict and that is good but this character and the screen are such a tough mix. I think people have trouble with the Clark Kent/Superman secret. Glasses and a suit don't fool people. I want it to be good but have concerns. I also felt a much more "higher power" theme to the movie and will be curious to see how that plays.

This trailer was also played for the Giant Slayer this weekend and I can't wait to see this. Looks like they are giving it a real reboot which is what they needed to do the last time they made an attempt at a Superman movie. One thing they have not revealed is much of Zod and how he is portrayed; that will be an interesting thing to watch for. I think that unlike previous incarnations it is obvious that we are going to see Superman/Clark Kent fighting with the internal demons that are within him more than what we are accustomed to. Kostner's line about letting people die to protect his identity is an indication of that. Very excited about this one and hope it means a return of a great movie franchise.

Thanks Talk but you are missing the entire reason for the site. You can get the "canned" synopsis at 100's of sights and if that is what is what you want, have at it. This site is built by a group of us who love the movies and each other. When we talk about movies, we don't sit in a circle and recite what some stiff in an office wrote. We talk about the movie, how it made us feel and how we related to it or not. At the same time we are usually laughing our A$$es off. We want the people who visit to contribute their thoughts and laugh with us or at us. Some people like the news and others like Jon Stewart's version of the news. The great thing about the internet and TV is that you have choices. We would love for you to stay here and join the party but it is certainly not mandatory. Life is too short.

Everybody really bags on the last Superman film, and while I won't say it was great I did not think it was terrible. I think one of the areas where they went wrong was in looking for a Christopher Reeve look alike and then concocting a love story where Superman has a love child with Lois Lane. This movie looks like it could have an edge to it that the other film lacked, the actor seems to have broken out of the Christopher Reeve mold, and he does not seem to have the "Aw shucks" country boy naive quality that just does not seem to play too well in this jaded world we live in. Looks like the character is still one to be admired, willing to sacrifice self for the greater good, a quality I think we can all admire. I am looking forward to it and hope it revives the franchise the way the Christian Bale Batman revived that franchise.

Hey popcorn, I hope that you are right. My big concern is that this character may not ever be really great on the big screen. He is The Man of Steel and as a comic character has not aged past a certain point and gone through almost every variation of theme known to readers. Unless they darken his emotional baggage and make him more of a person, this character will always be better on the pages of a book. That is my .02.
